Transylvania University

I had some wonderful, and very caring teachers at Transy. I made some lifelong friends there. I was treated well by the administration and staff. The scholarship and financial aid offices were always helpful also. I have no complaints on that end. While my own academic experiences were good, I look back and realize that Transylvania was not worth the money, was not diverse enough, and really did not prepare me for the "real world". It was...expensive, fun at times, way to focused on Greek life, and far too insular. I hold no ill will towards my school, but, I when asked, and I have been, I don't lie and say its a good choice. Unless you have a ton of your parents cash, and just fall head over heals in love with the place when you visit (do so twice), I would recommend you look elsewhere for your education.

I have throughly enjoyed my time at this school. Transy provides it's students with many opportunities. It is up to the student to have initiative to make the best of these though. During my time I have joined greek life, had an internship, and played college sports. In addition, my liberal arts education has helped me find my passion. Upon entering I was undecided but I will be graduating with a major and two minors in fields I have discovered during my time here.

That being said Transylvania is not for everyone. It is a very small community and as such you can get a reputation quickly. If you plan on raging face and sleeping with everyone, people will find out. Transy can also be a little cliquey especially among the Greeks. It is not as bad as other colleges though (having spent time at a few). Because it is so small it's hard to remain separated.

In all honesty most students at Transy are a little nerdy. Most students enjoy being challenged and sharing our opinions with each other. This school really is an educational community, although we do know how to party on the weekends. I think to really fit in with the student body at Transy you were most likely in the top of your class in high school, well liked but never the most popular, diverse in your interest, and open minded. These are the people that I think enjoy there time here most. Like I said it's not for everyone.

Transy provided me with a liberal arts basis for a scientific career. It has taught me to think of how past events, both evolutionary and historical led to our current situation. That is an exceedingly rich world view--sometimes lucrative, always interesting. The college is affiliated with the Christian Church, but there was never any emphasis on faith or belief at all. We were rather challenged to think, learn and form our own opinions in all things. Professors Lila Boyarsky, Richard Hays, and Lee Hamon opened my eyes to a gee-whiz approach to science that has let me lead my medical career at the edge of the envelope, and contribute much. Transy has grown and changed some since I was there. Those emphases do not seem to have changed. If you want to learn those things, choose Transy. Wherever you go, try to learn those things!
