Positive Negative Neutral Advice
I love this school.AverageBiology
I love this school. The people who complain about the school are the people who just expect everything to be handed to them whether it be an A in a class or just having a social life. This is college...work hard to get that A and if you want to make more friends, well start being more open. Also, if you're a commuter student, you're probably more likely to rate negatively.

I never met anyone ho received a better education in my field (biochemistry) than I did at Stony Brook, at any price. I went to Stony Brook to learn as much as I could about my chosen field, and I wasn't disappointed.I do wish I had known that ultimately, I wouldn't like working in the field, but there was no way to have known without doing it. Perhaps I should have broadened my horizons more.

Question
If you don't mind a depressing atmosphere, andNot so brightBiology
If you don't mind a depressing atmosphere, and aren't much of a party person, I can see why Stony Brook is for you. If you're more into the party scene, this is not the place to be at all. The police on campus have nothing better to do than to bust parties and constantly raid marijuana users, even for the tiniest amounts.

Sure, the people are fairly friendly but the faculty couldn't care less about you. They are focused on their own personal research and are snooty to any students who could use some help.

The food is overpriced garbage that you have to wait 30 minutes for, if you're lucky. You're also lucky if they give you what you ordered.

Over half the students leave on weekends, so there is nothing to do on a Saturday night but get wasted and hope the cops won't come get you. But they will.

You can't have a car for the first two years, so you have to walk everywhere. It's a big campus, and temperatures are below freezing for most of the year. You do the math.

I hate it here. Even if you do happen to make some friends, a great deal of them will transfer out. I'm surprised I made it 3 semesters. I've had it. I can't take it anymore. If you're into pot, it's pretty good out here I must say. Marijuana is decriminalized in New York, but the cops treat it like a felony here for some reason. I have friends who have had great academic standings but were arrested for bits of residue found on their desks. Obviously this is more of a penitentiary than a scholastic facility. They don't give a damn about you. If you won't leave they will kick you out. And if you don't smoke, there is nothing else to do here. Nothing.
