In short, George Mason lied to me simply because they wanted my 70$ application fee. If they are going to blatantly lie to prospective students, imagine actually BEING a student. I also heard Mason parking is terrible and can't accommodate all students (big surprise here).
CAUTION to all prospective students: Everyone thinks Mason is a gateway school into the Govt. and Govt. related Washington jobs. Have you ever heard of Georgetown? American University? The George Washington University? Those schools are in D.C. too and they are a lot better than Mason. Mason only gets the leftovers.
Between a Georgetown double-major who speaks 3 languages and a regular George Mason student, who do you think is going to get the Govt. job??? Mason is the school that EVERYONE got into. Remember that. In Washington, if people found out you went to Mason, their enthusiasm for you dies.
Washington D.C. rule of thumb:
-Georgetown students are held in high-esteem.
-George Washington students are often negatively stereotyped as close-minded rich kids but certain programs are held in very high esteem.
-American University students are lower on the totem pole than GTown and GW, but great faculty and Government departments are very respected in Washington.
-Mason is dead last.
Employer: "So you went to Georgetown I presume?"
Applicant: "No, sir."
Employer: "Ah, I see. You must be a George Washington Man eh?"
Applicant: "No, Sir. Not quite."
Employer: "American University? I was under the impression you attended school in the city?"
Applicant: "Well, almost. I graduated from George Mason."
Employer: "Oh my lord! I forgot I had a dentist appointment....right now. But I'll be in touch."
The campus is safe from intruders, but not safe from the police. Never ever mix alcohol and campus. You will get caught. The police violate every amendment you have and will screw you over just because they can.
On campus housing is terrible... Since they lack housing on campus, they turned all the 2 bedrooms dorms in to 3 bedroom dorms, and so on. If you ever imagined partying on campus, they have hired people to walk threw the halls about every 15 minutes to bust people. If you do get in trouble for anything, (alcohol), you will most likely get kicked off campus, first time.
If you want to move on campus, enjoy trying to find a parking spot for about an hour. They are building new parking garages and buildings and got rid of a lot of parking. They will tell you there are enough spots, but the spots they talk about are 2 miles away from the heart of campus on a gravel parking lot! To make up for that, they provide a crappy shuttle service that takes no less than 30 minutes to get to where you want to go. They sit at each stop for 5 minutes. You can pretty much walk faster than the shuttle. They only have 1 going at a time so if you miss the shuttle, you have to wait an hour to catch the next one. Not to mention they have police sitting right at the shuttle who will try and get you to talk to them so they can arrest you for nothing.
Go greek or go home, it is the only "fun" at mason. Greek life is the only social aspect on campus. The basketball players who aren't really that good in the perspective of college, think they are gods. Most of the players can't even afford to wear anything than there little green jump suits and they act like they are going to the NBA. The truth is, none of them are and none of them will have a life after college.
The women are ugly and think because they are hot because all the decent girls in society goto REAL schools.
Overall, if you want to get an education, Mason is the place to be. If you want the college experience... try Radford or VCU. (def take JMU if you get in)
