If you're black (African/American), expect racism. Not so bright
If you're black (African/American), expect racism. If I were you I would go to an open minded school like VCU or George Mason where there is real diversity Or an HBCU for that matter. 3% black population is just not enough and I get why this schools AA population has been declining. I'm telling you! It's difficult to build a community that supports each other with 3% of the students being black. We're very scattered. You're going to feel very much like a dot on a white paper. Out of place in most of your classes. It's hard to make friends here also because I think half the students have a lot of prejudice without even knowing you. I've been very depressed my entire stay here. I went from being a straight A student to barely passing my classes. At first I thought there was something wrong with me but It's just this horrid school. If you're a black parent reading this review, Please don't send your child here. It's better for a student to be at a place they feel welcomed and happy rather than a big school with a good name in the middle of nowhere that also has racial pressure. This is not a party school. There is little social life. The cops shut down parties, even though we're in the middle of nowhere and there is literally nothing else to do. There are several stories of cops racially profiling students, but that's probably at every school. While I was on campus, I saw three confederate flags in the dorm room of students (those are just the ones I saw, I can only imagine how many more there are). I don't want to infringe upon their right to hang those flags up high as they want in their room but that pretty much lets you know what their mindset is around here. Also don't get too excited about the sports here... We've had a terrible football and basketball program since I was a freshman and I'm about to graduate this winter. Hokies got great school spirit and food though. If you're into school spirit and food, this is the school for you.

Question
I don't know why people keep trying toBright
I don't know why people keep trying to compare Tech to UVA, William & Mary, and JMU. That's like comparing apples to oranges -- especially in the case of W&M, which doesn't even offer engineering and is primarily a liberal arts school. And last time I checked, both W&M and UVA were harder to get into and had higher caliber students overall (with Tech's engineering and architecture programs being notable exceptions)and are considered "public ivies." Very smart people choose all four schools for a variety of reasons and they all have pros and cons. I've had siblings and/or cousins at all of them -- so I know what I'm talking about. So stop comparing and figure out what you can get from Tech while you're here. I personally have found the huge classes here, professors who don't speak English well, and the lack of personal attention to be a problem. My cousin at W&M, for example, is having a total "ivy-like" experience there with small classes, stimulating discussions, professors who know him, and even hot girls to go out with. However, the social life is pretty good here at Tech, and Blacksburg is fun. I will probably stay here, even though I have some issues with the place. And people at Tech seem to think the only thing in life is football, but I kinda knew that coming in, so I'm fine with it.

I really hate it over here, basicly have to spend every waking moment to finish hws/projects. the class duration of letures are very short, about (50-55 min) basily about 2 hours per week for a 3 credite hour course, which leaves rest of the time for you to figure everything else on ur own...to the professors everybody is basicly a #......u'll be lucky if a professor remembers ur name...from what some professors have said is that they are mandated to fail at least 10-20% of class thats even after the 40% of the class whom drop the class...as for tests u have to really master each subject in order to pass the subject because u dont get much time to the tests...as for competitiveness, all i gotta tell u is this..every body is hungry for a good grade..if ur not hungry enough..then ur sol...
