The art education department at the U of I failed miserably at preparing future teachers for the classroom. They offered no methods classes, we were not told of the Illinois State Standards and they offered no support during student teaching. Thankfully, because of my outside experiences I did not struggle as much in my first job as did some of my classmates. I know of no one in my class that remained art teachers after graduation or their first year teaching. If you want to become an effective art teacher and want a program that will help and encourage you in becoming a great teacher I suggest that you look elsewhere.
