Iowa is easy to get into and tough to stay at. The social scene is on par with the best in the big 10, which can be a strong advantage and disadvantage at the same time. On one hand, a lot of students focus their energies on drinking and partying and end up either failing out or freeloading off harder-working students. On the other hand, learning how to play well with others is a much-needed dose of reality for the typical incoming freshman. Most students are able to find a happy medium, but it's those who don't find this medium (the bad apples, if you will) who spoil the bunch.

Classes are surprisingly challenging. In my current job environment, I work with people from all across the big 10, and can say without the shadow of a doubt that Iowa did a better job of preparing me than UW-Madison, UM-Ann Arbor, UI-Champaign or IU Bloomington did for my coworkers. Throw in the fact that Iowa is much less expensive (in-state and out-of-state) than these schools, and the choice is clear.

Finally, Iowa City is very easy to navigate. There are busses for the lazy and obese, but the University itself is not very spread out. One could easily walk from one end to the other in 20 minutes. The distance between most classes is less than 5 minutes, and from the dorms to the heart of campus is either 10 or 5, depending on your location.
