For me, my years at Iowa have been a mixed bag. Originally, I chose the school because of the cheap instate tuition and the close proximity to my family in Des Moines. While I have been at school here, I feel like I have outgrown the area. After completing internships in two major US cities, I long for a level of sophistication that is hard to find. They call Iowa City the Paris of the Midwest. This may be true but it is still IOWA City. There are segments of Iowa City that are great. There’s a vibrant artsy writing culture and there is hippy element you would not expect. The Pedestrian Mall and downtown area are great… But the social scene is mostly centered on drinking and partying. While this was great my first year, I crave something more intellectually fulfilling. Some of the instructors are great. Overall my classes are ok. Given the chance to do so again, I would have chosen a different school. I have often thought of transferring. I have a lot of friends here… many of them would not agree with the above.
