Perhaps it is a bad experience for undergraduate school, but depending on the programs you desire, it is pretty standard as a graduate institution. Poor undergraduates, I'd say. I used to be a PhD student in chemistry at FSU, and the department there is pretty bad. The city is a shithole for the most part (lived there for 1.5 years) and the college town apartments are overpriced (especially the studios). Studios for >$500 in North Florida? Give me a break. I taught labs and assisted lectures at FSU, and the undergraduates are just as dumb there as they are at FIU. If you seek less dumb students, you're better off at a private institution. As for where the students go when they graduate. Try law firms, business firms, and laboratories. This is South Florida. Most normal people begin their job seeking locally, as it is cost efficient. I bet more of your North Florida graduates come to S. Florida than than the other way around. Local recruiters love alumni, as they themselves may be. There are over 100,000 alumni from both UM and FIU in Miami. If you want to be in Miami in general, it's either FIU or UM. There are more internship opportunities than you can shake a stick at here. So please tout your FSU/UF experience all you want. I've been a student at FSU and my brother has been a UF student. Guess what. Both of us graduate at the top of our class and we both left those schools because the respective programs we were in were shit, and the schools left things to be desired. Nothing's perfect, and you're going to have to deal with some shortcomings. Did I mention I was mugged in the middle of the FSU campus? I can show you the crime report emails; they get about 2 muggings per month. Thanks FAMU. It's your choice and your program in the end. I'm a forensic science student now. We have 100% employment leaving out program, just thought I'd throw that out there. Lastly, this is Miami. The city is absolutely amazing. If you want more than just an academic experience, trust me the city's offerings make up for the shortcomings. If you want NCAA footballs teams and crowded college bars, stay in North Florida. |
Major: Other (This Major's Salary over time)
DO NOT GO TO FIU. The school is terrible and it is not the most prestigious university to attend. It is a 4th tier university. FIU has also been struggling with some budget problems for some time now and we have a lot of dishonest students on campus. If you leave your laptop or cell phone unattended for more than 20 seconds it will get stolen. FIU?s campus is not safe particularly the south campus because it is located in the middle of a bad neighborhood. In fact a student was stabbed to death on campus by a fellow student about a month ago. But this doesn?t come as much of a shock seeing how Miami has the 3rd highest crime rate in the country. If I knew then what I know now about FIU I would have never attended that school. The professors don?t care about any one, the students are petty thieves and there is never any parking on campus. Parents your children can do much better trust me. Send your child to FSU, UF or FAMU so they can graduate with a diploma from a prestigious school and they will be attractive to both employers and graduate schools.
