First off, I'm not your typical Miami student. I'm a bit of a nerd, and I don't own ugg boots or a north face jacket. People are correct in there being a definite majority of pompous, materialistic people. However, with a bit of effort, you will find many incredibly nice and accepting people with diverse interests (although there is very little diversity in the physical sense). I have never been interested in greek life, and instead made many friends with common interests by joining clubs(there are so many of them. I highly recommend clubs as its a fun choice for the financially impaired who may not be able to afford greek life, as well as people who think greek life is stupid). You will also get to pick your dorm based on your interests which helps you meet people.

Academically, Miami is fantastic. Professors are easy to approach, talented, and eager to help students. Classes are engaging and are not taught by TAs (with the exception of some labs). There are many research opportunities for undergrads too. You can easily start as early as freshman year if you want.

This school is definitely known for the business school, however, the engineering department is quickly growing. The advantage to being in a smaller department is that they really want to see students succeed.

My advice is that if you decide to go to Miami, maintain a positive attitude about the students. If you get it into your head that everyone is a snobby airhead, then you will miss out on finding some great friends. Instead, stop complaining, realize you're very fortunate to attend such an amazing college, and participate in activities that you're interested in so that you can find your niche.

questionI heard that some kids are pretty snobby and was wondering whether the whole social situation was that bad…I am going into Chemical engineering but I also want to party :) Hopefully I'll get into some sports but do you think it'll be a good fit? How hard are the academics?
