University of Iowa was the weirdest school/grad progamme that I've ever been to (and I speak from an experience of lots of grad students there). At the beginning, everything seems fine - and everyone is "friendly" and positive: just faculty, and students. After a few months, u realize that that friendliness is just fake, and that people are not for real. In my department, students were really weird and lacked basic social skills. Most of them were either just from Iowa, or afraid to basically state any normal human opinion, jelous, untravelled - who basically did nothing else except go to school and work, like robots. It was very difficult to make friends, and have any kind of social interaction. The faculty at the beginning seemed fine, but later also showed their true side. Basically if a student would say even something a little bit negative about the school or them, they would freak out. Also, students report things to professors, if they hear anything negative - like Nazi Germany, not realizing that maybe someone might be going through a tough time, trying do adopt to a new environment etc. Students! Be aware - at The University of Iowa about 15% of the students each year get in some kind of trouble with the police or else, for very weird, minor, demenours ( I know at least 4/5 students who got in trouble for no reason). The faculty instead of caring for their students, and about their well being would help but complained about teaching, and would force them to do everything on their own complaining how busy they were, and force them to work hard - old style, closed minded, without much understanding. What a pedagogy! Anyhow, I am so happy that I am out of there. There is a lot of weird stuff that goes on at that university, and most of negative reports on here are actually the truth. Please go to a bigger town/more normal environment, with more openminded people, especially for a grad programme!

commentHaving lived in about a dozen other cities outside of Iowa, there are very very few cities in the United States more open-minded than Iowa.
Perhaps what you actually encountered was more of the Chicago suburb mindset?
