Major: Nuclear Engineering (This Major's Salary over time)
I believed Ohio State University would be the best in-state university. This review is for people who actually want to go to school to LEARN. If you want to learn, don't come here. As for social life, it's not even fun either. Walk down High Street at 2pm on a Saturday and NOTHING will be opened. Good luck making friends if you don't know a foreign language, since everyone is international.

They force you to have a meal plan for the awful greasy food, and it's easy to get sick after almost every single meal. There are always gnats in all of the food places, and finding hair and pieces of plastic in food will start to become common events.

These people are…the worst. I've never met such idiotic assholes in my life. I didn't know they existed, I thought it was just a myth until now. Everyone is an alcoholic, and no one can comprehend the simplest of concepts. Prepare for your daily classes by getting ready to hear the stupidest questions asked throughout the whole lecture.

The staff will work hard to avoid you and tell you everything is fine even when you come to them for help. If you say you're uncomfortable with your roommate since he's drunk all the time and threatens to kill your friends, they'll say it's normal to feel some tension with your roommate from time to time. I've gone through 2 roommates and both were insane. (By the way, don't go for International House in Morrison.) They take all the socially awkward international students and stick them on one floor, paired up with US students, hoping to "stabilize" them.

Crime is everywhere, and I can feel the pollutants in my lungs as I walk to class. The classes are alright, if anything, too easy, but with so much busy work that teaches you nothing. The teachers range anywhere from friendly/good to the worst teachers you'll ever have, so good luck.

responseIf your major is nuclear engineering and you consider yourself very bright, your classmates will ask what you consider stupid questions sometimes, unless you go to a school like Harvard or Princeton, where everyone is really bright. I've dealt with some of the same thing at my current school, High Point University. Singling out OSU for that is unfair.
responseI googled High Street under the Maps part of the site to see what was on that road, and I got tons of results. Almost everything except the churches is open from early lunch-time to 11 PM or later, including on Saturday. I have no idea where you got that nothing on High St is open on Saturday afternoon.

People asking questions that you deem stupid is simply going to happen if you consider yourself quite bright and your major is a very difficult one such as nuclear engineering. Some of my classmates from old courses asked questions that I thought were stupid at times. This is not strictly an Ohio State issue.

You're going to a school with 40,000 undergraduate students. There will be some alcoholics. There are alcoholics at almost any school in the country. There is a number of alcoholics at my school of 4,000 undergrads. You will not get away from that issue unless you go to a school like Brigham Young or Liberty.

It doesn't sound like the staff was trying to avoid you and dealing with your problems. Sometimes you get a terrible roommate. I got a horrible living situation in my first semester. You just do what you can about it. Didn't you know that there was a risk of getting a crazy roommate at one of the biggest public universities in the country? You put 2 people from potentially very different backgrounds in the same room and make them live together for a semester or two, things can get ugly.

Did you come from a small town with no crime? If so, you probably weren't prepared for the crime. But what crime are you talking about?

It would have been nice if this review had been anything more than broad generalizations.

commentHey I'm the original writer! Your responses are rather fair. I posted this first review in my first year and have since adapted better. I really disliked this university at first. Don't get me wrong, I still don't like some aspects of it, but I wrote this review when I was very frustrated with my current situation. I would like to update this review with a new mind set, and hopefully you people who made responses will take my new review as more fair.

I still don't care for the type of people here, mostly because I'm extremely introverted. Everyone seems to be mostly football based, mostly because that is what kind of University it is; Football is big. I don't care for sports, so it can get annoying to deal with. If one likes this type of environment, go for it. If you don't, it's nothing unmanageable-just a bit..confusing to understand sometimes. I live on campus, so there is more of a chance to deal with freshmen, and hence, more drinkers and party-oriented persons, which is why I was so angry in my first review.

It is a city, so I suppose there will be crime. A few have happened on campus, and many of the safety lights to call 911 from anywhere on campus are broken, so that was a bit intimidating. But the campus is generally well lit with other people around, so if any criminal activity happened, chances are there would be others around. I don't really like that it is a no-weapon university, because I rather have something to defend myself with if need-be, even if it is less-than lethal. But hey, it IS a school…

I have gotten used to people asking questions that seem obvious to me, I shouldn't have been so cruel about it (at least they were trying to learn right?) and I'm sure my questions may sound unintelligent to others at times. Like I said above, I was frustrated at the time of writing so that is the only reason this was included. Well, also because I think there should be an ability to test out of basic GECs (now called GEs). I never found a way to, so if there is a way I just missed it.

I still do not get the roommate situation. A friend of mine stated they actually heard in a conference that they send over-seas kids with bad social skills to I-house, which (if this is true) I think is unfair. We had many problems on that floor and two people got kicked out for threatening people, locking people in bathrooms, and destroying the housing's property. I'm sure other buildings may be better, but it is sad that this housing building made me completely unlikely to ever wanting a roommate again. I now know other people from other housing complexes became best friends with their roommates, so it is possible of course.
I used to walk down high street and many things were closed during the weekend. Maybe by chance I picked a freak holiday time or something, but many shops were closed in my experience.

As for the professors, I still think there is a very broad range of them. Some are nice but difficult graders, other's are confusing but give out As. It all depends on chance, as well as how hard one is willing to work. Sometimes I give it my all and I can never obtain that perfect grade, even if I do all the requirements on a rubric. Other times I hardly try and still get a perfect grade. I suppose you have to get to know what your teacher wants in order to get better, but I have had a few that just refuse to give anything higher than a C. Most are willing to talk things through with you, but just remember some will not-and refer you to textbooks instead.
I also dislike all the construction. It seems they constantly build things we don't need with my tuition money.
I hope this response gives a clearer, fairer review this time around. If anyone would have asked me my first year if I would suggest this school, I would have said stay away. However, now I like it well enough. I almost transferred out, but I decided not to at last minute and I am actually glad. Now, I would have to say I would probably recommend it to most people. Go for it, and give it some time. And don't post reviews when you're blind with rage!
