Major: Computer Engineering (This Major's Salary over time)
Okay, so I've just spent the last few minutes reading through some of the reviews of Elon, and I think a lot of the negativity is blown way out of proportion. Yes, there are white, rich, preppy people at Elon. Yes, there are some students who care only about getting blackout drunk. Yes, the area surrounding Elon lacks a lot of exciting things to do.But none of these things should be a surprise to anyone who plans on attending Elon. A private school in the South is bound to attract the preppy types, any school with a tuition price as high as Elon's will contain these types, but by no means is this the exclusive population of Elon. I have met so many people who are smart, interesting, dynamic individuals who don't care about getting wasted every weekend or who aren't caught up with wearing peals and sundresses, or bow ties and polo shirts. There are plenty of people at Elon who want to learn and take advantage of the opportunities Elon provides, because there are so many opportunities. For a campus as small as Elon's, there are so many ways to get involved, whether it's in service learning, student media, the arts, internship opportunities or studying abroad. Elon recognizes that a college education goes way beyond the classroom, and provides the right programs and services to students so that they can make the most out of their college experience. And a student could choose not to take advantage of these opportunities, but that would be a huge waste of time and money. As far as the academic rigor at Elon - is it super challenging? No, it's not the hardest school out there, but it's challenging, especially if you're in the communications department (which has been stated on here before). But where Elon excels in the classroom is the hands-on element to their academics. As a journalism major, I've had so many opportunities to do things that are relevant to my career and are actual portfolio builders instead of lame busy work or textbook reading which is only good for a quiz or a final exam. That isn't to say you won't be reading out of textbooks, because you will be, and yeah, I've definitely had some mediocre professors in my last three years at school, but the amazing ones I've had far outweigh the shoddy ones. The professors at Elon really make it a point (usually) to be as available as possible, and the small classroom sizes make it possible to have a relationship with their professor. To me, that was one of the most attractive things about Elon - the small classroom sizes and 30 student (or less) cap on the classes. As a result, I've really gotten to know professors, and even helped one on a start-up project that gave me real-world experience and a boost to my resume. The curriculum at Elon is structured to give real-world experience, and some majors even require internships. Most students I've known complete two or three before graduating.Burlington, the city right outside of Elon, is certainly not the best place in the world. If having a vibrant city atmosphere right near your campus is so important, than Elon isn't the right school. But even so, Greensboro is 20 minutes away in one direction, and Chapel Hill 30 minutes in the opposite direction, which provide plenty of nightlife, shopping and entertainment options. Elon could do better with having more on-campus things to do as well, but most students are so involved with extracurricular activities or go out of town on the weekends that it's not the most necessary thing in the world. No, Elon isn't perfect, and the stereotypes about Elon are definitely true to an extent. But you can still have an amazing experience without buying into those stereotypes or getting "brainwashed," as some people put it. There is so much to do and experience at Elon and, especially if you're a communications major, plenty to learn and do.
