At
first I was very hesitant about going to Umass. At
my high school there was a very negative connotation about
going to a state school where a good deal of
the kids were accepted. However money and location quickly pushed
me into going here. However I have not regretted accepting
to go here ever since. There was a great deal
of kids who had exactly the same story as me
and they were also surprised that there were other kids
like them who did not just come to party. There
are so many people who came here because they had
to and ended up with an awesome experience both socially
and academically. Indeed at a big research university like Umass
you get what you put in. If you want to
go out every night there are places to do that,
if you want to be academically successful there are some
very difficult honors courses with teachers who, in my experience,
are some of the best I have ever had. There
are also numerous research opportunities where undergrads can go and
gain experience. Regarding the people almost every other freshman wants
to start over, meaning that they will be friendly to
everyone they meet, no matter how weird you are you
will easily find your group of friends.
The campus could
be more aesthetically pleasing but its not horrible and with
an awesome town so close by no one is really
complaining. It is really cool in the morning to see
the berkishire mountains covered by fog as well.
Overall Umass
is an awesome school. It is a good test of
the real world where you are sometimes treated like a
number and need to step it up in order to
be noticed. In the coming years more and more people
will apply making it much more competitive but even at
the moment it is still an incredible deal for an
excellent education.
