This department is far from producing quality outstanding research work compared to other universities. It also has deplorable teaching practices.

Graduate students gain admission to programs through personal contacts with faculty. Students who can?t do simple arithmetic multiplication; students who don?t know a basic distance measure such as Euclidean distance; and students who attend courses and classes they are enrolled in, once in a month are touted as exemplary graduate students. Such students are propped up to be the best in research; they publish 15 or more research papers in a span of 2 to 3 years and are put on an accelerated Ph.D graduation plan. Indeed, these students have little knowledge of the content of the research papers they have published. Such students also typically win the department?s research awards (and university?s research awards through recommendation by the department) before graduation. Many have also found job placements soon after graduation. Obviously, their employers have not verified the veracity of their research work.

Many graduate teaching assistants also make extra income through questionable practices. As teaching assistants have the full authority to grade student work, they also have access to exam questions prior to conducting closed-book exams. These teaching assistants sell the questions (and solutions) to the highest bidder (student) for monetary benefit prior to the exam. In many cases, the faculty member teaching the course is fully aware of the situation.

An ethnic majority controls the functioning and administration of the department. Others who fall in line with the practices promulgated by this ethnic majority are rewarded quickly and generously. The ethics of such practices set this department in this university apart from good universities.
