Overall this school is not as horrible asAverageSociology
Overall this school is not as horrible as some say. However, if you are not aggressivly seeking your desired experience this university is the worst place to be. Your time here is going to either suck and be a waster of time or relatively enhancing depending upon your attitude. If you are easily influenced go somewhere else, there are too many people here who talk just to hear themselves talk, and none of them has anything outside of ridiculous to say. The faculty members are solid (in the soci dept anyway) but the administration is below mediocre and approaching the level of the inept. The finacial aid office is NOT helpful and treats you as though you are scum, they are very discouraging. Grad school here is a joke (I hear that around hear alot). However I am very happy with the sociology dept. in particular the crimonology aspect, the faculty well spoken and very friendly. Forget about Western IL come on over to NIU potential law enforcement officials and criminologists.

Question
Even though I did not end up stayingMusic - Performance
Even though I did not end up staying in music, what I learned as a undergraduate within and without the music program at Northern Illinois University has proven to be very valuable. I certainly left the university very different than when I came in. I would recommend to High School and undergraduate students to look at their undergraduate program as more of a overall learning experience, and to cherish not just what you learn in your major courses, but also what you learn in your core courses and in your experiences outside of your courses.

Question
The time that I spent in the graduateGeography and Geosciences
The time that I spent in the graduate school at NIU were probably the worst in my life. I say this after serious reflection. Not only were the faculty and staff not helpful, they seemed to do everything they could to throw road blocks in my way. My so-called advisor never had one serious discussion with me on my thesis or career. He did have time to cut me down to the other grad students with remarks like, "someone of his social class should not be allowed to attend a university." I'm not kidding- I overheard that one myself. I recived my B.S. with honors, I scored exremely well on the GRE, and I was a member of MENSA. Plus, I was a quiet sort of person that kept in the background and just did his work.

I think that the only reason that I was recruited was to be slave labor (graduate teaching assistant.) I was piled with so much work (teaching lab sessions, lab work, filing, cleaning, bottle washing) that I had little time for my own work. No one had a stronger work ethic than I did, or a stronger commitment to the field of geology. NIU totally killed that. I ended up leaving and retraining in engineering.
