Boston College - Comments and Student Experiences | |||||||||||||||||||

Instead of understanding BC for what it is, a Jesuit Institution grounded in tradition, these Students impose their "liberal world-view" on an established and proven model.
Among the sea of moral relativistic and ultra-liberal Colleges, BC stands as a refreshing alternative for Students seeking a time-honored curriculum based on the Classics.
The Administration supports individual thinking and creative energies through various programs. What it does not endorse is activities that contradict the moral teachings of the Jesuit tradition. You have other Schools that could accomodate you in that regard.
Fenway Park will never be a home to the New York Yankees but it certainly will welcome "guests" from their fan-base.
With so many good quality Schools in the Boston area, Students naturally develop an affinity for their own Institution and unfairly criticize others based on Athletic Competition (such as the Bean Pot), annual College Rankings and other very superficial reasons.
For a small School, BC generates a fair amount of attention from the local and national media due to its success in Athletics, Academics and Alumni. With the enormous popularity of BC, the Admissions Office naturally has to reject a large number of prospective Students. Also, the Campus is very isolated from other Colleges where they blend in more with the Urban landscape. The locals around Chestnut Hill, in particular Newton and Brighton, have also waged legal battles with BC over expansions efforts, tail-gate parties and noise levels from Upper Campus (where Freshmen Dorms are located).
This creates envy and resentment from other Colleges in the Boston area. When BC fields a very successful Team in any given Sport, other Students in the area actually root against us. When the grand blue-print was recently unveiled for BC to expand and rebuild the Campus, some Politicians and local Residents openly opposed it.
So when you read a "Negative" review here, you have to take it with a grain of salt.
Well, the Academics and BC's famous Quad certainly has a distinct Ivy League feel but I don't think this is a fair label since the School offers so much more.
The Athletics for one trumps any Ivy League School as BC plays in Division 1 in all major sports. The Social Life is simply fantastic! You often hear Alums like Chris O'Donnell, Elizabeth Hasselbeck, Amy Poehler, Peter Lynch and Doug Flutie talk about how much they cherish their days wandering through the Dust Bowl with their Friends. The School Spirit is insane. You can't sneeze without hitting a BC logo anywhere on Campus. The extracurriculars are loaded with diverse, fun and intelligent options. My personal favorite is Pops on the Heights, where the Boston Symphony Orchestra plays at Conte Forum for a formal event designed for the BC Community.
So I think BC is much much more than what any marketing label people like to put on it. BC is an experience that's highly unique and very spiritual. How many secular "Elite Schools" can make the same claim?
