Sure, out of state students can do the same thing but who can afford to drive up from Virginia, just to drop off a few measly belongings? All of this is done to screw your new roommate and this information is well known among in state students.
The out of state experience continues throughout your years here too. Many PA students come with a preset number of friends and exclude the out of state kids. It is worse than high school with the cliques. As an outgoing guy, I usually find it easy to make friends but too many PA residents make it very difficult to be included.
The academics are okay but non-native teachers are sometimes too difficult to understand. They become aggregated with constant requests to repeat what they are saying. I feel as if I am missing out on part of my education.
I feel that there are better schools that are equally fair to ALL students so I woulnt recommend it to anyone coming from a different state. I'm paying a higher rate to be given less as an out of state student.
The atmosphere is a different story. Student life is great at PSU. Contrary to what a lot of people say, there is a lot of stuff to do besides drinking. There are many clubs you can get involved in; there is something for everyone at PSU and chances are you will find other students with similar interests. Football games are outrageously fun. The campus has 3 great fitness facilities (really do take advantage of this, because it is a great way to de-stress). Downtown is a nice scene, especially with the wide variety of restaurants and bars that you could go to. Then there is, of course, THON (the 46 hour dance marathon dedicated to pediatric cancer). THON really is the shining star of philanthropy and service at PSU. PSU is definitely not for everyone. If you are alright with large classes and little to no professor-student interaction, you may do well here. If you would rather have meaningful student-professor interaction that could benefit you in your schoolwork, Penn State is definitely not a school for you. I guess it also depends on your program as well so just research your particular program and do talk to current students, as they will give you the best portrayal of the school.
It was awesome. But then reality kicked in my second semester. My teachers couldn't teach, I was learning from the books. I taught myself more then the teachers ever did. I had to rely on other students to help figure out difficult assignments, the advisers were horrible to me, and more and more I started to dislike it.
I was putting in so much effort and not getting any results. I didn't go to parties, I didn't hang out. I just studied and still struggled to hold a B average.
My program was horrible and I am transferring now. So are a bunch of other people in it as well.
I think the final straw for me was the JoePa firing. I'm sorry, but not many people at this school think for themselves. They all run into things because well "Its what everyone else is doing" Rioting? Hurting people? Knocking a truck over? That is not supporting JoePa that is being idiots. I'll miss the people I met but I don't think I'll miss much else
