The College of William and Mary

I honestly have to say that I'm very pleased with my college education - although I think I might have taken a different major if I had the opportunity. For the most part, the faculty are exceptionally well qualified and helpful. They are always available - many of the professors that I've had have even invited the class to call them at home if they have the need to. The social life leaves a lot to be desired - so if you're less interested in learning than in getting drunk, you should considered UVA or tech. At least there you won't have to think too much.

It may sound trite, but the people that I see who are not successful here (who consequently are the ones who leave) are generally just can't cut it academically. The school is very very demanding, and many students just can't pass muster. That is what starts the spiral of negativity - "I'm failing...I hate these dorms, and the campus...and my professors, this place stinks." That does bring me to mention a critical point: if you are not getting the material, you WILL fail. You won't get a C or B as you would at an Ivy, you will outright fail. Consequently, many who leave have the false impression that they are infallible.

I should also make it clear that WM is poor. Poor poor poor. It isn't a big research institute like UVA, nor does it sport mindless throngs of football fans with cash like Tech. Most of the graduates are public servants - attorneys, government officials, and teachers at other universities. There simply isn't much money from alumni. Furthermore, the state appears to enjoy strangling the educational system in Virginia.All things being said, I would not recommend WM to most people. It's tough here. You won't party much (although you can party if you know where to look). You'll be stressed out for four years. However, you'll get probably the best undergraduate experience and education in the country (arguably, to be sure). This isn't what most people want - they want to attend a university that affirms their belief in their own abilities, rather than challenges it. So if you are strong personally and academically, don't come here. You'll simply end up writing negative reviews like so many misinformed people on this site.
