I graduated in the early 1990s with a BS in Chemical Engineering. In summary, it really sucked. Some people really got something out of the department, but I didn't—that doesn't mean the program sucked. It was extremely rigorous—we started with 150 people and graduated 18!

I learned more in my humanities and Math/Science classes than in the engineering classes. The social life absolutely sucked. At the UofR, it was totally possible for an above-average looking guy with a lot of money NOT to get laid! The social life really really really sucked at UofR. I knew many ugly girls who actually got asked out and laid for the very first time in their lives simply because of the slim pickings on campus.

UofR is a very expensive school with an amazing faculty and curriculum, but ZERO recognition or reputation. It's really a shame. The one thing you SHOULD pay for is the rep, and that's the one thing they totally lack. Total misfortune. UR has a huge workload, and it's a highly prestigious school, but, it has no rep. When I walked into interviews and told them I went to the UofR, no one even blinked or batted an eye. After all the cash you shell out for a UofR diploma, that really sucks. It makes your stomach sink.

It sucks because I've seen interviewers' eyes light up when they see Purdue, Penn State, Michigan, Illinois on a resume', but the first thing they ask when they see UofR is:

Oh, so how did you like RIT?
or
How was the curriculum at SUNY-Rochester?

Aaargh.

Great school, but NO return on the investment. I feel as if I got my guts ripped out, but I got NOTHING for it.

I ended up getting an MBA from a good school, and I'm pursuing another MS from one of the best schools in the country, and this is helping my career advance by leaps and bounds.

UofR is an amazing school that doesn't even have the notoriety of a bad rep. It's worse—UofR has NO rep!

Save your money and go to a good state school.
