Major: English (This Major's Salary over time)
If I could do it all over again, I would apply at Northwestern, even if it costs more (and I would have to apply at least a month earlier). Politically, this is not an active campus, unless someone was caught sneaking around the dorms. There is only one readily accessibly student news source, and it's so liberal even I, a registered democrat, am turned off by it's bias. Compared to Ames (Iowa State), which has beautiful scenery, Iowa city is a jumble of buildings that make architechts want to commit suicide. Academically, my classes have been easier than they should be becasue I can't seem to find motivated professors outside my gen-ed classes and my language classes. The difficult classes I have inside my major (English) are difficult only becuase the criteria I'm being graded on isn't clear. I'm not challenged as either as person or as a student, thus, this campus isn't helping me develop in any way. On the bright side, the bars are packed every weekend, and there will be a lot of house parties once the only-21 bar ordinance passes in August of 2003. This isn't good news if you're not a big drinker (like me), but if you want to keep yourself occupied at the University of iowa as an English major, you'll learn to either hit the used bookstores or hit the bottle!
P.S. Some of my workshop classes are top-notch, and the professors outside of my department seem to know what they're doing—I learned a lot my first two years here.
