Major: Geography and Geosciences (This Major's Salary over time)
I originally started at the University of Chicago and did okay, until I was dragged down by the expenses of it all. Working 40-60 hours a week combined with a full courseload eventually caught up with me and I dropped out. At Iowa, not only was college readily affordable, but the courseload made it possible to work part-time as well as take on an internship. While the geography department is outstanding, I am not certain that other majors fair so well. I also minored in computer science where quite a few notoriously unapproachable or unreachable faculty reside. By sticking to summer and night course for the intro courses in computer science, I avoid most of this. The town of Iowa City is great (I have stayed here and taking on a minor role in city government). The students combined with the town though is a bad combination. The influx of somewhat well off Chicago suburb students seems to breed a drinking culture that has a strong negative impact on the city. There is a house party scene as well that will get stronger with more stringent laws targeting underage drinking. If you do not like either of those scenes, social opportunities are limited.
