Major: Undecided (This Major's Salary over time)
The comments the black female from the class of '08 left are pretty much accurate. However, I would place a bit more blame on the school for the ostensible segregation amongst the students. Crap like the Harlem Renaissance Center just gives students the opportunity to stay within their comfort zone all 4 years of college. The end result is a group of suburban white kids from NY and NJ living on the top of the hill with a few minorities sprinkled around and a large group of them at the bottom. I believe made the right choice by not living in any of the cultural houses. The social life is dull. If you can see yourself getting drunk three times a week and ending up in the same club every time, then you will love Colgate. There are other things to do, but you must be prepared to be in a smaller group - as the majority of the students simply drink and go to the Jug. There is NOTHING else to do in Hamilton. The nearest entertainment is the Turning Stone Casino which is 45 minutes away by cab. There girls are snobby JAPs and preppy collar popping white kids, but you will certainly find a clique if you look early in the year. The classes have difficult. I entered expecting to fly through all my courses as I had a much higher than average SAT and GPA for the school. If you focus, A's are definitely possible in most classes, but don't expect anthing higher than a C if you put in the minimum effort.I know this review seems negative but I love the school. The rural environment may be frustrating at times, but its quite a nice change from the urban area in which I was raised. The winter is harsh, but students find ways to have fun even during the lowest temperatures. I think I have had such a good experience so far because the majority of the people aren't the arrogant Colgate stereotype. Yes, there are a lot of alcoholics and club kiddies, but most of them are genuinely nice people if you get to know them. Hamilton is a real college town. A lot of the dorms SUCK. If you are lucky enough to get a room in Andrew or Stillman (and West, to a lesser extent), you will have twice as much fun.I've only been here one semester so maybe I haven't met EVERYONE, but nearly everyone who I know loves the school.
