In 1988, tuition was $500 for 12 hours. Tutions has increased 5 times as fast as inflation. I just read a book called, "College is for suckers." I believe that tuition has increased due to supply and demand and limited seats. There are too many people applying for college. In Germany, students are assessed as to whether they should goto college at 14. There is no shame in not going to college. In America, a trade is looked down upon. But not in Germany. There are too many people going to college in America. There are probably not enough jobs for all the graduates. There is probably a significant shortage of non degree employees. If I had to do it again. I'd probably train for a technical job or aprenticeship. I think part of the problem is the ulterior motives. People go to college for respect and the illusion of a high paying job. Teachers teach for respect instead of talent. I am not saying that a degree won't make you intelligent. But for most it's not a magic paper that will give you a good job on a silver plater.
