I remember reading a lot of these reviews about GSU before l came here, always keeping in mind that my college experience will be whatever I make of it, and I'm glad I wasn't scared off by the negative reviews. GSU turned out to be the perfect school for me. The student body is so massive that it's very easy to meet cool people and make friends. The classes are challenging, but not to the point where they take up too much of your time, and most professors understand that you have other things going on in your life. Downtown Atlanta is kind of a dump, it's true, but Midtown and East Atlanta are great. There are lots of fun things to do and cool places to go in Atlanta if you look for them. I highly recommend living in the dorms for at least your freshman year, but try to avoid the Commons and Piedmont North. They're extremely far away from everything on campus. I don't know much about Piedmont North, but I know that in the Commons it's about a 5 minute trek to get to your room from the bottom of the building. You have to go through turnstiles and a lot of security and access card doors. The rooms are nice if you can deal with going through all that security every day, several times a day, but to me it's not worth it. The Lofts are definitely the best place to live on campus. They're close to everything and it's easier to get to your room. I lived there for my freshman year and it was a great way to get acclimated to the campus and the city. I noticed some reviewers on here complained that there's no school spirit, but I would say there's a different type of school spirit. A lot of people who go here are proud to be GSU students. I've heard nothing but good things from students about Georgia State classes and professors. Just because not everyone here is in a frat or sorority and most people don't care about the football games doesn't mean there's no school spirit, it just means GSU students are cool enough not to be into that kind of lame, high-school-esque bro culture bullshit.

Georgia State University may not be held in the highest esteem at the moment, but I guarantee you that is going to change soon. GSU has a 10-year plan with projects that involve tons of renovations and improvements that will be made on campus and around downtown. They're going to add a lot of new classroom buildings and student housing and other facilities. They're really going to fix the place up, just like they did with schools like UGA and Georgia Tech, which used to be shit holes in the 80's. I bet that in five or ten years from now, downtown is going to look like a completely different place. In the meantime, though, GSU still provides the best education for your money, with tuition at only about $3000 a semester. The main appeal of Georgia State is definitely its affordability, as well as the fact that it's in an awesome city like Atlanta. It continues to baffle me that people would rather go to lame schools in the middle of nowhere when you can go to a good, cheap school in a cool city with endless opportunities and things to do. What kind of connections are you going to make at UGA? You're in Athens. You're in the middle of fucking nowhere. If you're young, smart, and cool, and want to actually get involved with your major and make important connections that will help you in the future, go to Georgia State. It's a no-brainer.

questionThank you so much for this review. When i first started looking at the reviews i was starting to get a bit scared about my decision but this really pulled me away from all of that. I am 16 years old and will be a Freshman at GSU in the Fall and I am trying to make an as smooth transition as possible so just, again, thanks.
I was wondering if I could keep in touch with you during the Summer and possibly during my first semester for the more student-related questions. Thanks, Shalinda.
