What do you suggest if you compare UM with UFL? I m hoping to be accepted from both schools physics departments with Ta/Ra position in fall 2010. And Im an international graduate student. Were you in my shoes which school do you prefer and why? |
I've got news for you. Physics everywhere at your level is applied math |
How serious is the greek life? to be totally honest i could give a crap less about greek life and I really dont want to join a sorority or anything…but would i be better served trying to? |
Major: Physics (This Major's Salary over time)
This University is a job factory. No one reads their books so the teachers have to repeat everything the book says in class. Students, by putting in little to no effort, cause teachers to dumb down classes and become an audio book instead of discussing interesting philosophy and developing your intuition. Everyone I meet worries about jobs they are going to get after college which imposes pressure on their teachers to give out passing grades and discuss the necessary algorithms needed to survive in a related career instead of instilling knowledge for sake of knowledge itself. Physics here is basically applied math: there is very little intuition developed and little to no philosophy discussed. You will however leave the physics department with great prowess in mathematics. The University of Florida is a great social environment. It is a city of its own with many different groups of people. You just have to be willing to talk to them. There are hipsters, frat kids, nerds, jocks, stoners, and anyone you can imagine. There are a ton of extracurricular activities, clubs, movie theaters, bars, sports fields, and natural environments to enjoy. The Greek life is well represented and football is the blood of the university. I learn more from the library than I do from my classes. But I embrace and enjoy the college environment while it lasts, meeting tons of acquaintances and a handful of amazing people who I will never forget.
