Notre Dame has very high academic standards for science majors. It is hard to get good grades. If it can be done, then students should do well in graduate/professional studies. Socially, Notre Dame was very homogeneous. Most students were wealthy and white, which led to large problems with racial tension on campus with minority students. I am a Native American with a brown complexion. I stopped dating after my freshman year due to racist incidents at Lyons Hall. Some of the women clearly wanted "whites men only" in the proximity. So racism was a problem. To be fair, not all students are like that at Notre Dame. There were nice students there. Some of them are still my friends even after 14 years. In my opinion, I think some minority students would benefit from waiting until graduate school to attend Notre Dame. The freshman year was harsh for many Hispanic, African American, and Native American students. But if they can survive, it does "toughen" them for the real world. Notre Dame's high academic standards are legitimate.
