Colgate is a university that helps you learn and grow. It helps you to become a capable, informed individual by getting you involved on campus and in the Hamilton community. Colgate encourages thinking, opinions and ideas that may or may not be popular but are genuinely respected. I think that is a very important aspect of a liberal arts education at Colgate. While it's true that not everyone favors the environment here, it's also true that many of those same naysayers come to appreciate Colgate for all that it is by the time they graduate. That being said, student complaints about snow or Greek life or drinking or preppy white rich kids and a lack of diversity get old. To an extent, those are accurate descriptions of many schools but they by no means define life at Colgate. My friends at BC, Dartmouth, Williams and Middlebury get just as much snow if not more so. Colgate does not hide its small size or small town roots and uses them to its advantage. Those who don't understand that Hamilton, NY is not Manhattan in disguise are always the first to complain. Wake up. Things happen here! The Dalai Lama was here. The Stanley Cup was here. The facilities are first-rate, the campus is stunning, and students are safe. The Division I sports are impressive for a school of Colgate's smaller size. By not taking advantage of the many opportunities here and focusing on anything else, you're allowing the best four years of your life to pass you by.I think Colgate plays the recruiting game just like any other school; it highlights the attributes that would appeal to college-bound students and their parents, but nobody twists your arm to come here.
