I think Cal is an amazing school.BrightBiology
I think Cal is an amazing school. I love the environment, and it is intellectually challenging, as well. I feel that in and around campus there are always places to explore and that it is rather easy to keep yourself from being bored. There are tons and tons of fun restaurants in Berkeley and lots of fun shops, too. Not to mention some really great parties. As for the classes themselves...yes, they can be tough. However, there are lots of facilities and people you can go to for help. For example, there are study groups at the Student Learning Center, or you can go to office hours, or (if you're living in the dorms), you can ask a floormate for help. I guess the takeaway is that Berkeley is the perfect school for me, and (if you're looking into which schools you should apply to), definitely give Cal a shot.

Question
I am from a pretty small town.Quite BrightBiology
I am from a pretty small town. I was valedictorian, and I was kind of expecting to get into Berkeley. When I found out, I was excited, and couldn't wait to move into the dorms. By the way, the dorms are ridiculously expensive. I was expecting Berkeley to be this place where everyone was brilliant and hip, and I would learn and meet great friends. Wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong. As a science major, I'm stuck in huge lecture halls, where nobody knows my name. The students are all too absorbed in their work to be social. 90% of Cal students are socially awkward, and the 10% that aren't are mostly athletes and people involved in Greek Life. I am proud to be a Cal student, and I am receiving a great education, which was my number one priority. However, I am not having the best time doing so. Every day is frustrating, and every day I have to feel like I am a dime a dozen science major at an enormous University.

Question
I attended U.BrightBiology
I attended U.C. Berkeley starting the fall of 2004. It's been three years now, and without a doubt, if I built a time machine to go back in time, I would still choose Cal over the other schools (UCLA, USC, UCSD) I was accepted to. So what's the scoop?

The academics will tantalize your mind. Most of classes require you to have a profound understanding of the subject in order for you to get an A. Although it is a small hurdle for some, if you keep it up, you will be amazed at what you can do- helping prepare you for life's future challenges.

The faculty are absorbed in their work, but they are helpful if you show up at their office hours. I have never seen a professor not do his job splendidly during office hours, and most are even okay with setting up additional individual meetings. Occasionally, they will even offer you work, or an internship. The key here is to explore and utilize opportunities immediately, without delay, and without apprehension.

Sure, there are those who sit back and do nothing, and whine at the lack of resources or social life. This isn't high school anymore. You really have to ask and probe around in order to find a niche in the Cal community, probably more so than at other schools. But those who complain- it isn't because the opportunities they look for don't exist.

Many students here are also engrossed in schoolwork or some other unusual subject. Many others are unfriendly and thus a permanent friend like one in high school can be difficult to find. Like always, the antidote is to look around. Also, luckily, the women at this school have improved dramatically since I was here in 2004. So if you're ready to step out into the macrocosm, this is it. The one and only...
