Cornell is an elite university without being elitist.BrightPolitical Science
Cornell is an elite university without being elitist. Its prestige is not founded on its connection with the blue-blooded societies of America's past, an ancient and unfortunate association of the Ivy League. Rather, its reputation has been carved out by developing some of the very best research programs in the country. As a result the faculty is world-class and its departments are greatly respected within academic circles.

Students here are extraordinarily ambitious but not in their own world. It is somewhat of a myth that Cornell is overly competitive and pressure laden. Students are generally quite approachable and open-minded; a fairer statement would be that they know when to work hard and when to play. Personally I believe it is this "myth" that colors the perception of their experience.

What is not contested, however, is the unique beauty of Cornell's campus. It has a natural "outdoorsy" feel to it while the buildings and halls reflect the traditional gothic style that originated in medieval Europe. Less appealing is the town of Ithaca, which while pleasant, can feel boring and isolated. I think the reason why so many students (including me) indicated they would try another college is not for the college itself, but for a more exciting environment.Still, I would definitely recommend Cornell. The lectures may be large, the professors a little self-involved, and yes...Ithaca. But if you are a courageous soul and you keep your head about you, there is no reason for an intelligent student not to thrive in this university and have a wonderful time doing it.

Cornell is quite simply the most beautiful, serene campus I have ever seen. Sure, it's not in a city, and there's not a whole lot to do in the way of big-name events, but the air is clear, and waterfalls abound, and there are none of the soul-killing, depressing sights of the big city. Faculty are first-rate, bars are good (check out the Chapter House), and libraries are fantastic. Lots of work? Sure, I suppose, but you learn the material.
