Attempting to make a blanket statement about theQuite BrightPhilosophy
Attempting to make a blanket statement about the quality of any university is generally ill-advised: I can only say that UH has been a great experience for _me_ academically and socially, and that if you are looking for the sort of things I was looking for, you will be quite happy. All of the departments I've had prolonged exposure to have been excellent. For a liberal arts student wanting to enter grad school, the Honors College, with its brilliant professors and plethora of opportunities, is a dream. We have wonderful English professors and a distinguished Philosophy department. As with ALL schools, the difficulty level of the coursework is entirely dependent upon the professors. No matter where you are, do your research on whoever you take. Some professors are easy and inspiring, some easy and uninspiring, some difficult and inspiring, some difficult and uninspiring; some you'll just take to get through a course and others will change your life. I can certainly say that I've become a more thoughtful person from my experiences here, for my part. I've heard great things from friends in the sciences department as well.

I don't care so much about school spirit or a campus community, and I didn't get it. Regardless, through the Honors College especially, I was able to make quite a few thoughtful, intelligent friends. The dorms are problematic - food, old housing, etc - but social life is never a problem. As a white person, it's pretty enlightening to be the minority here sometimes; I'm the only white in my work environment. Houston - for those with a car - is full of art, shows, restaurants, social opportunities. And naturally, this university is CHEAP - cheaper than basically anywhere else. This place has advantages and disadvantages: figure out what you're searching for and see if UH will provide you with what you need. I can only vouch for myself, but I'm very glad I came.

Question
I have been to UH for two yearsAveragePhysics
I have been to UH for two years and now at SWT for over a year. I checked a few crime statistics for 2002-2004 that universities must disclose to the public. UH aggravated assault 5 per year and SWT aggravated assault was 3 or 2 per year. UH burglaries are 25, 14, 30 and SWT buglaries are 37, 39, 41. SWT larceny was 158, 164, 134. Couldn't find UH larceny statistic. But UH defines larceny under burglary. UH forcible sex was 2, 3, 0 and SWT forcible sex was 4, 1, 2. I never witnessed a crime at UH. I once left my passenger window completely open all day and my checkbook and stuff was still there. SWT student told me that his friend witnessed a rape outside the UH dorm. I told this story to an acquantance and he thought I was the one who witnessed the rape and did nothing like a coward. At SWT, someone vandalized my motorcycle that will cost $450 to fix plus lawnscape manager created $200 more damage to bottom fairing. Police operator said lots of motorcycles are stolen in San Marcos. I felt safe at UH. I'm not even black, I'm Korean. The neighborhood is extremely poor around campus. But strangely if you drive maybe a mile from campus suddenly expensive or nice homes and apartments.

Question
The support departments, specifically those within financialAnthropology
The support departments, specifically those within financial aid and the like are ran by the most unfriendly and unhelpful staff I have ever encountered in any environment. I have had to fight for aid monies twice after being told the money wasn't there, and ended up having the money. They don't care about the students, just run them through like cattle. The Anthropology department has a couple of great professors, but unfortunately, the department is not financially supported and there is little in the way of exciting fieldwork or research going on here. A real shame, as there are a couple of very capable professors here. If you're in Texas and interested in archaeology, better to head to A&M. Heavy book load in some courses; do NOT buy books at the campus or offcampus bookstores; much cheaper online. Wait a few weeks until you know which books you actually need for the class. Most of the courses here are easy, provided that you show up for class, take good notes, and study for exams. If "school spirit" is important to you, look elsewhere. This is a commuter college, and most students live off-campus and are not involved in a lot of social activities centered around the school; atheletic activities are very lightly attended. The neighborhood surrounding the campus is one of the worst in Houston; there are literally crack houses within a block of the campus. The campus is somewhat dangerous, particularly at night. Armed robbery and assaults are fairly common.
