There are also very many other organizations for people with all kinds of interests.
The Monroe Scholar program is good. It's based off of high school performance and is permanent. We have our own freshman dorm that most of us live in that year (it's not any nicer than the others, but it's got a good location and cool people). We also get $2000 for a 5-week research project one summer (guaranteed) and $1000 for a 2-week research project the summer after our freshman year (not guaranteed; only a certain number get this). In all other respects, we get the same education as the rest of the students.
The town is boring, but Colonial Williamsburg is fun for a short while.
Campus is absolutely beautiful! We have huge trees, a humid but otherwise nice climate, a beautiful lake, and a well-designed campus.
The housing situation is ok. A lot of sophomores get screwed in the lottery, but that should get better over the next several years as we are building more housing facilities.
Classes are, as I expected, rather easy. Unfortunately, I haven't done much actual thinking as a freshman here. It's mostly just memorization compared to my private high school (Trinity School at Meadow View). Still, a very good education, and it should get harder.
Grading is very hard. Do not expect to get A's.Overall, I absolutely love William and Mary and would highly recommend it.
If anything, I now wish I had MORE time at college. W&M is a small, extremely intense academic liberal arts school. That's what it bills itself as, so don't be surprised at small, demanding classes, academic stress, and a rather lack of social and cultural options. I chose W&M because I wanted an environment where I (a somewhat social nerd) fit in, and I found it. I pledged a sorority first semester, played women's rugby (!), joined academic societies, did study abroad, Model UN, wrote for the Flat Hat for one semester, and even helped edit the literary journal for one semester! There are endless options of things to get involved in. I had two independent study classes one-on-one with a teacher, and large classes too. I loved the historic campus, and Williamsburg itself was not bad.
I don't think this college would be a good fit for people looking through an easy ride through their four years, nor for people looking for a big city and LOTs of entertainment options. The school also has a distinct liberal arts bias (excepting pre-med and business majors), and the grading is HARD. Working full-time is a breeze compared to my senior year.Anyhow, seven years down the road, I still regard my undergrad years with great fondness. W&M is a great school for those who know what they're getting into!
