As for students... there are a surprising number of students who have no social skills whatsoever. None. Nil. Zero. Nada. Their life is schoolwork. That's fine with me, but the way you live your life is not fine with them. They will go out of their way to make your life Hell. Trying to listen to a CD in your room? Nope. Study time. How bout the common area? Nope 3 other people studying. So looks like it's headphones for 4 years. Oh yeah, this doesn't have to be late at night. Try 3pm... 6pm... anytime... like it matters. Also, some are so sheltered it's almost unbelievable. These are the people who will write the daily paper about how it's not fair they got a speeding ticket because they were only going 29 in a 25 zone. Like anybody cares. If you were speeding, the police have the option to ticket you. They are also the people who will debate you about anything and resort to name calling if you try to argue your point. Get used to it. Not everyone's this way, mind you, just a good healthy percentage.
Interested in things to do at night? Nope. Not here. I drove to DC. There's 3 "delis" that get packed to the point of bursting. Don't worry, the girls dress up for them like it's a nightclub. Just like at the fraternity parties. All packed tighter than a Keebler Elf's asshole. Oh yeah, and guest lists are a joke. Be sure to carry 6 forms of ID.
If you do anything wrong... if you lie about anything (ie: lie to your girlfriend about if she looks fat or not) you can be brought in front of the Honor Council. Oh yes, it encompasses all aspects of your life adademic/social/personal. But don't fret. You'll be judged by a "jury of your peers." Right. These are the same people who call the police when you're playing your CD too loud at 8pm on a Friday night. Good luck with them. Maybe you'll just get kicked off campus for a year.
Also, good luck with the administration. Some of them have their heads shoved so far up their ass it's hilarious. Some are fair. Some are morons. You decide. It's like finding the Queen of Hearts at a street gambler's table. Odds are you're not going to get a good one. But don't worry, the bad ones are oblivious to their own ineptness.
The extracuricular activities are pretty nice. Lots of intramural sports and the likes. That stuff is always fun.So... moral of the story: You'll get a good education, but you'll probably end up putting up with load upon load of bull shite. Best way to decide... ask people from your high school that have already graduated and currently attend.
W&M is a place where history has been made, and continues to be made. A few months ago, a group of students co-founded the first student-run PAC in Virginia, and now they're going state-wide, starting chapters at other colleges. These guys raised money, ran radio ads, and registered a thousand voters for a state-wide referendum for higher education funding. Thats the kind of thing I love about this place: People are interested in tackling big problems and they are willing to put the time into doing it.
The faculty here are some of the best I can imagine exist. They know their stuff, arent afraid to answer the tough questions, and are always available outside of class. I call a number of my profs by their first name, and thats just fine here. Last month, when I had missed class for a number of political events surrounding the PAC I mentioned before, my professors were helpful and accepting of the fact that having lunch with the Governor to talk about the College's funding was more important than missing class... there's a real sense of priorities. I went here because it wasnt close to home (I'm from CT), and I'm going to stay in VA because the people I've been lucky enough to work with are the same people I want to work with 10 years from now.
