Positive Negative Neutral Advice
As a high school senior, I didn't thinkEnglish
As a high school senior, I didn't think college be any better or more fun than high school. Then I went to W&M which turned out to be the best four years of my life. I seriously contemplated purposefully failing senior year so I wouldn't have to leave! Academically it is VERY challenging...I went from getting straight A's with little work to getting B's and C's with quite a bit more work. You get used to it, though. Let's face it...you're in school with some really, really smart kids and so if you're just plain smart then you're not going to be at the top! I learned to enjoy my academic mediocrity at W&M and just be satisfied that I was learning and loving doing so. It also didn't hurt that most of the country knows W&M is a very competitive school anyway so they just think it's awesome that you went there...they don't really care about your GPA.

NOW...here is where my opinion differs greatly from the general opinion...SOCIAL LIFE AT W&M...I thought it was great!!! I made tons of GREAT friends and still keep in close contact with many of them. I personally went out at least 3-4 nights a week (possibly explaining many of my C's)at the local "delis" which are cooler than bars anyway. I was also in a sorority which did, I'm sure, partially contribute to my social life but I had many friends who were not Greek and went out just as much. Granted...there aren't a LOT of places to go out, but as long as you're with friends who really cares if it's the same place over and over? I'll never argue that W&M s a top party school...there is a good 50% of the student body that probably never ventures from their dorm rooms, but I would hate for most people to think that there weren't social opportunities for those that wish to engage in that type of activity. There are PLENTY of things to do around Williamsburg...Paul's, College, The Leafe, want to jump the Governor's Mansion wall anyone?, Sunken Gardens streak, etc.

BOTTOM LINE: W&M is full of nerds...but some of us were fun nerds!!!

Question
WHO IT'S FOR:Super BrilliantHistory/Histories (art history/etc.)
WHO IT'S FOR:

Those who are willing to study nights and weekends for the sheer joy of learning. Those who are looking for a great education and a thousand opportunities. Those who can tolerate the lack of a party scene. (This is by no means a 'party school'--go to UVA if you want that.)

WHO IT'S *NOT* FOR:

Those who aren't willing to spend the extra hour re-reading a research paper to check for glarings errors. Those who expect college to be a breeze, awash in alcohol. Those who need constant stimuli and a fast-paced life--Williamsburg doesn't offer much in the way of that.

STRENGTHS:
-Academic reputation--W&M is known as the queen of the "Public Ivy League" and with good reason.
-Cost to in-state (Virginia) students--an Ivy League education at a state school price.
-Professors--phenominal. Ask around for the best ones when you get there...students will be more than happy to point them out and tell rambling, funny stories about them.

-Students--are fantastic. Brilliant, witty, friendly, approachable, laid-back as a rule. Most are fairly tolerant...just don't bring up the subject of our current Chancellor, Henry Kissinger. Half the school loathes him and the other half doesn't know who he is.

-Tradition--the second oldest university in the country. (Curse you, Harvard!) Thomas Jefferson's (amongst others)alma mater.

-Off-campus Dining--being a tourist town, the area is home to a host of restaurants. The ethnic ones are the best, and not too bad on a college student budget.

-Campus scenery--great landscaping, set in a historic area. No twenty-storey concrete monstrosities on THIS campus.

WEAKNESSES:
-Cost to out-of-state students--you WILL be gouged for your fantastic education. Trust me. Unless you're a FAFSA rider, be prepared to pay through the nose for everything.

-Social Scene--I list this as a weakness not because I believe it to be so, but because it's a common complaint on campus. Williamsburg is pretty, but dead after 6.00 PM. No malls, clubs, or nightlife to speak of.

-On-campus dining--mediocre at best.
-Parking--Horrendous. I don't even have a car and I know how bad it is.
-Tourists--more prevalent than you'd think, especially in fall and spring. Quieter in winter. There's a reason we call them 'tourons'.

-Building maintenance--many of the buildings are falling to bits, and not just the oldest ones. The school is incredibly cheap, and cutbacks in the Virginia state budget have hurt the school considerably.

-Diversity--A good 2/3rds of W&M comes from NoVA (Northern Virginia, the area around Washington D.C.), and the majority of students are white or Asian, and middle to upper middle class. For a non-VA resident like me, it's frightening at times.MY OPINION: The College of William and Mary was my first choice school, and since I'm an out-of-state student I can say that I had a number of places to choose from. I wouldn't trade it for anything, though. I love it here.

Question
If you want to have a life awayBrightPolitical Science
If you want to have a life away from your books this is not the place for you. If you are a white middle-class Christian who has no interest in what's going on outside of the library then you'll be among friends. There is one bar that will serve underagers, no nightclubs, no shopping... Oh but do we have churches, retirees and tourists galore! If you're looking for political debates and a nightlife then I'd love some company but we'll be alone... The academics are fantastic though so if you can focus solely on your classes and not care that everyone looks the same and has no opinion on world events then you'll do fine.
