Date: Jun 23 2005 Major: Psychology (This Major's Salary over time) Try to get some advising at UW, though I can't imagine how this is done. It was nonexistent when I was there and still is, according to members of my family who recently attended. You must make a very very concerted effort to get to know at least one professor well so that you can get recommendations and any kind of mentoring. Grad student TAs are not a good substitute. The Psychology department was overcrowded when I attended, and for the most part, wanted to weed out a good number of students. It was geared towards research, not teaching. If you want to concentrate on behavioral or experimental psychology, the department is OK. If you want to go into counselling, take a look at the Social Work department. In general, I would recommend looking at smaller schools in attractive locales as an alternative to UW Madison. Though I love Madison dearly, the school is just too big to get a great education, even if you study really hard and get good grades—it's still well nigh impossible to get any personal attention from anyone there.
