I went to SWTSU on a full scholarship. I also got into NYU, Scripps, Rice, UT, A&M and Southwestern. Honestly, I went here because I got enough scholarships to cover everything-even living expenses. I got scholarships at the other schools as well, but not enough. I had no money to go to college—my mother was a teacher—we were poor. So, I reluctantly went to school here. And I felt I was above it. It had an awful reputation as a party school for dumb white kids. And I was a smart poor kid who needed to be challenged. And I was. I'm still ashamed that I was so snobby about this school. Granted, I was part of the honors program and had particularly amazing classes through that…check into it! But all of my classes were great…and taught by professors. Meanwhile, my friends were at UT and Rice and the Ivy Leagues being taught by grad students who didn't really give a damn. The professors here are here because they want to teach, not because they're building a name for themselves with your money and time. I love academics and I was silly-happy here. My closest friends are still those that I met here and they are bright, successful professionals now. The campus is beautiful. Yes, there are hills. But there's a saying about the women's legs here ;) There are a lot of Greeks…but they're kinda like that weird uncle that you still love—just part of it all. Basically, I got a great education, had amazing professors who really cared, spent my free time swimming in a pristine river, ate a ton of the best Tex-Mex and had most of San Marcos rooting for me along the way…excellent community!

responseJust a slight correction: Graduate students are not allowed to teach undergraduate classes at Rice. Every single course is taught by professors.
