Syracuse has impressed me from the first day it popped up on my college search list. I'm from the Midwest, and I was impressed with how diverse the campus is. Diverse—not in that calico skin color way, but diverse as in there are so many different lifestyles there, and they are all active. Though there is a predominant amount of rich kids, I have found that they act independently sometimes in finding their niche. The University doesn't tailor itself simply to one kind of student. The speakers and the extracurriculars truly offer something for everyone. There is an atmosphere of competitiveness, but it's not unhealthy because the University is so big, and I think that people have come to the realization that it's not just about the grades. Confession: some of the professors are arrogant, especially in the realm of communications. But I've found an equal amount of caring faculty who will review your essays and stay after class to clarify anything you didn't understand. Be confident and honest, and there's not much else you can do. When dealing with arrogance, just keep in mind that life itself isn't fair. It's a good lesson to treasure once the semester is over. Syracuse, the city, sucks. The mall is good, but plan on staying on campus. Supposedly, the campus is unsafe at night, but I think it's a lot of hype. There is an escort system, and you'll most likely be with friends anyways. And on a minor note, the vegetarian food is great. The best thing about Syracuse is the resources available. Beyond the professors and alumni, I really feel like Syracuse is the type of university that will try to accomodate you. Syracuse is the type of institution that you can discover yourself at. If you go there with an open mind and a will to learn, you are going to have the time of your life.
