Colorado at Boulder, founded in 1876, is a comprehensive, public
university. Programs are offered through the Colleges of Architecture and
Planning, Arts and Sciences, Business and Administration, Engineering and Applied
Science, and Music; and the Schools of Education and Journalism
and Mass Communication. Its 600-acre campus is located in Boulder,
27 miles northwest of Denver. The University of Colorado at
Boulder (CU-Boulder), a major research and teaching university, is a
dynamic community of scholars and learners situated on a beautiful
campus at the foot of the Rocky Mountains. CU-Boulder is
one of 34 U.S. public institutions belonging to the prestigious
Association of American Universities and the only member in the
Rocky Mountain region. The university has a proud academic tradition,
with four Nobel laureates, seven MacArthur genius grant recipients, and
86 Fulbright scholars since 1982. The university received more than
$255 million in sponsored research funding during the 2006 fiscal
year. Faculty members bring their research into the classroom in

81 Great Schools with Outstanding Community Involvement, published in June
2005, and produced 100 Peace Corps volunteers in 2007, the third most among all U.S. colleges and universities. CU-Boulder offers
more than 3,400 courses in approximately 150 areas of study
and 85 majors at the bachelors level. Undergraduates apply to
the following colleges and schools: Architecture and Planning, Arts and
Sciences, Leeds School of Business, Engineering and Applied Science, Music,
Journalism and Mass Communication, and Education. University facilities include an
observatory, planetarium, mountain research station, and a hands-on teaching and
learning laboratory for engineering. Outstanding departments and programs include astrophysical
and planetary sciences, biochemistry, biology, chemistry, engineering, English, business entrepreneurship,
geography, integrative physiology, law, music, physics, and psychology. Undergraduate specialty
programs in aerospace engineering, business entrepreneurship, and civil engineering ranked in the top 20 nationally in U.S. News & World
Reports 2007 Americas Best Colleges issue. Talented undergraduate students participate in a variety of enrichment opportunities on campus, including honors
programs, the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program, and 10 residential academic
programs that offer specialized living and learning communities featuring top
faculty and small-class environments. The student population comes from every
state in the nation and about 100 countries. Many ethnic,
religious, and social backgrounds are represented, fostering a multicultural community
that enriches the educational experience of each student. Students from
diverse backgrounds may receive academic, personal, and financial support through
one of the CU-Lead (leadership, excellence, achievement, and diversity) alliance
programs housed in various colleges and departments. The Study Abroad
Office administers 185 CU-Boulder-sponsored programs in more than 65 countries
around the world with more than 1,000 students participating annually.
In addition to outstanding academic programs, CU-Boulder competes in 14
intercollegiate sports at the Division I level and is a
member of the Big 12 Conference. Mens and womens teams in cross-country and skiing have recently won national titles. The
university maintains one of largest club sports programs in the
nation, supporting more than 30 intercollegiate teams in sports such
as cycling, ice hockey, lacrosse, swimming/diving, triathlon, and ultimate Frisbee. The campus also offers art galleries, a natural history museum,
theaters, concert halls, and an extensive calendar of social and
cultural events, highlighted by the annual Conference on World Affairs,
musical performances by the Grammy Award-winning Takacs Quartet, and the
world-renowned Colorado Shakespeare Festival. CU-Boulder recently opened the doors on
the futuristic Alliance for Teaching, Learning, and Society Center, a
structure that offers the university community groundbreaking instructional technology and
