The UIUC campus is beautifully arranged. Everything is kept well, even when there are no people touring the campus. You can always count on perfectly green grass and bright flowers EVERYWHERE.
The Preforming Arts center is probably one of the best in the nation. It is incredibly equipped.
Food- well, i think all dorm food leaves something to be desired... just remember to eat at the specialty resturaunts- you can use your meal credits, and the food is excellent(by comparison).
Umm- professors are hard to get to- and once you do, it takes a loooooooonnnnnnnng time for them to respect you enough to give you a straight answer (and listen to you)... but once they are on your side...
Dorms are pretty cool, just make sure that if you don't want to be around drugs and alcohol, choose a substance free hall.
The student body is friendly, but if you are from out of state, it will be difficult to break into some of the 'pre-fabricated cliques' because most of the students here came with at least 35 of their best friends.
As for the school- overall, it's an enjoyable experience if you don't let some of the stupidity get to you. After all, there are a lot of stupid people in the world, and this university does not escape them.
That being said, despite the high rankings, the College of Engineering isn't all I thought it would crack up to be. I am in a #6 in the nation department here, so I would expect to be a competitive job applicant and have an edge over students from other universities.
Right now I'm working at an aerospace company known for being highly selective with its interns, so I guess you could say UIUC has done some good for me. But one thing this internship has taught me is that UIUC is without a doubt a research oriented university. Don't expect to gain much practical workplace experience here. Without the name recognition, I probably wouldn't have this job. I am constantly showed up by students from smaller universities, and I feel as though my education at UIUC has been a waste so far.
So if you are looking to become a research scientist or professor, or if you're just a rich kid who wants to party and study some joke humanities degree, then this is the place for you. But if you want a real engineering degree that will bring success in the workplace right after a BS degree, then I suggest you look elsewhere.
