First, don't live on campus. Most of the people living on campus are high most of the time. My roommate smokes weed about three times a day and did about two hookah bowls a day during first semester. The food is terrible. I have never had food with more done wrong than when I started eating here. The dishes get very redundant quickly. And if you live on campus you're required to buy a meal card that is deathly overpriced. The cheapest per meal option works out to about $5.60 /meal and that's if you use every meal. If you don't use a meal you still have to pay for it. You can only get one 'transfer' meal a day, and even then that's even only if you have the right meal card, and the transfer food is okay. It probably wouldn't hold up in a competitive environment, but they have a monopoly on the students so the cafeterias do pretty well. And the most frustrating issue with living on campus has to be the dorms. Within the first month the fire alarm went off three times. Twice for drills (at seven in the morning!) and once because a water main exploded which blew up several peoples toilets, broke mine, caused thousands in damage and shut the water down on campus for a couple of days. That meant no water and no showers. For a couple of weeks we had to put up with not having a toilet, which meant going to a different building just to use the bathroom. The dorms also lack storage. There is only one closet per 2 people, which doesn't work. There is also zero privacy in the dorms. Any noise in the room fills the room so be prepared to buddy up with your headphones. Oh, and the beds are terrible, the floor is more comfortable.

The Campus Commuter Services are terrible. I once forgot to put my parking pass up and received a $100 ticket which the appeals office would not repeal even though the pass was on my seat. Parking passes a couple hundred bucks for an 'U' permit, which is the one you want, there is NO decent parking for 'E' permit. And they will tow your car if you have three unpaid tickets or wheel lock it if you park in the wrong spot for too long.

But if you live off campus and watch your parking you're in for the time of your life. The professors are brilliant and the academic advisers are brilliantly helpful. Two of my teachers, who are grad students, took the time to help me work out my fiscal situation on campus and offer to help me whenever an issue comes up. This isn't isolated, either. My other professors stay after class every day and help students with their work. I haven't met a professor that didn't put my success as an individual first. Every one of them is extremely approachable via office hours or email and is very personal through either means. Even when I've messed up dramatically none of the academic staff has sent me on a guilt trip, instead they did their best to help me get back on track.

To sum things up this University has two sides. The housing and commuter side which consist of some of the rudest people I've ever met and the academic side which is magnificent. Watch where you're stepping and this university will make you a very happy, successful student.

It's big, it's beautiful, and it's cold a lot of the year. Many introductory classes are very large but most professors are superb lecturers so they still get the point across to large classes.

Really you are just a number at this University, but it does have its high points. The education is good, but the student body is very closed minded and they really dont care about getting to know you.

Alright, so here's the deal. I'm hoping that some of you computer science majors are reading this. I want you to consider a few things. You will love the computer science department here. Hands down. TA's are knowledgeable and the professors are great. You WILL learn a lot here. The other kid who posted on here as a CS major was probably not suited for the major to begin with. I had previous experience with CS, so I dug right in. If you haven't had experience in CS, it's a bitch of a major, so stop complaining about how people aren't spoon feeding you. It takes a lot of personal dedication. You can't go into it half-heartedly.

If you're from out of state considering this school, I advise you not to come here. I came from Arkansasout of state and my freshman year was a nightmare. I had my $600 bike stolen, which was under university insurance, THANKFULLY. I had a total of 6 room mates through out 2 semesters. One was a psychopath who never talked, one was a kleptomaniac that tried to steal my xbox 360 and TV. Two were from Saudi Arabia and wound up trashing the place and were kicked out of there little Saudi Go To College For Free program, and left me and my other room mate with all their trash. I'm pretty sure they worked for Hezbollah.

Eating at the Heritage Center is...terrible. Walking outside your room...is terrible. If you love weed, drinking, slutty girls, slutty guys, NO REAL PARTYING, people who lack intelligence, or Mormons, then you're good.

Most of the kids in the dorms don't care about their futures and are majoring in Psychology, or like, communications, or some bullshit degree. So often times you'll be working on math and computer programs while you see other kids laughing and having fun outside. If you're shooting for the 4.0, you probably wont be getting back home till 5 or 6 and sometimes as late as 8 to 12...if you meet some other dedicated people. So basically what happens is you go back to the dorms, and you're STARVING. Only for the HC not to be open, and you're forced to stand around a bunch of stoned out snowboarders and their slut girl friends while you wait for a terrible meal from this little grill thing they have open until 11:30.

All of the friends I made lived off campus. They tend to be the more mature of the bunch. Most of the kids only live in the dorms because they live right down the street, but they hated their parents or didn't like the idea of not being able to smoke weed and get drunk in the house.

Anyway. I guess I would recommend this school to anyone who lives in Salt Lake. Or rhastafarian snowboarders.

I hope this was of help to you. Like, seriously. If I could sway your decision in anyway, I would. Don't. Come. Here. My plane leaves tomorrow and I'm going to have a really hard time coming back.
