I am an alum of Champlain. I also live in Burlington and have for over 30 years. In that time I have watched this college advertise itself into something it can only hope to be- something to and for everybody.

Champlain started out 50 years ago as a Burlington Business College. It only granted Associate Degrees up until the 90's.

If you are a Republican, you'll love Champlain. All the long time instructors know what's good for them and tow the party line. The admin is straight out of the old boys and old girls club. Students from upper class families get the red carpet. The "backwards design" curriculum, designed to "get you into the field as quickly as possible to see if you like it", is honorable, yet it's really done so they don't get unsatisfied customers, which really is what Champlain is all about- happy customers. It's a business school at it's core and it reinvents some new program for drawing in people of all walks of life and promising them professional careers when really all they can offer with their diploma is entry level skills into your chosen profession.

I graduated in the late 70's with an A.S. degree in one of the social science curriculums - I was told I was a professional in the field of Early Childhood Education. I did really well. In retrospect, the courses were so very easy. When I tried to get a job through the Career Development Office, all they told me I was (well)qualified for with my degree was an $8.00 child care job. I was so sold a bill of goods and an inflated piece of paper. I did go on to University and grad school elsewhere and earned my B.A. and M.Ed.

The campus is as one other reviewer stated, a collection of old manisons which, to their credit, Champlain does try to keep up but they can't keep up. New academic buildings have been endowed by local Republicans who secure their seat in Burlington history by doing so.

If you don't have the scores to get into a professional school, lean to the right politically and don't mind the lack of differing opinion, lackluster Champlain is for you.
