Major: Sociology (This Major's Salary over time)
Now that I've had a few years to reflect on my undergrad experience, I think I'm able to offer a clear-minded assessment of what I experienced.

Wingate is a mediocre school for most undergraduates-I can't speak to the graduate programs or specialized majors. Most of the classes were watered down so students could pass and many people graduated without understanding the basic concepts of their discipline. I double majored in Sociology and Spanish-the Spanish being the more difficult of the two majors. The upper level sociology courses were very basic and many students switched to soc. for its reputation as an easy major.

The professors are really nice-I never really had a professor who did not seem to enjoy helping students. This is highly atypical from what I understand. Also, Wingate is centered around student success. I feel that people who flunked out of school did so because of their own slothfulness.

Campus social life revolves around fraternities and sororities. I was on the Activities Programming Board (which is officially in charge of campus activities) and all the activities were poorly attended UNLESS they were sponsored by sororities/fraternities. At the time, Wingate had 5 Greek organizations. In a school of less than 1,000 on campus, that's ridiculous. The real action occurred off-campus at the Lacrosse house.. Most students drank, except for a portion the Baptist students, and they congregated in apts. governed by lenient resident assistants.

Wingate/Monroe sucks for a college student. Charlotte is a 45 min drive (not 20 min. like the Wingate website maintains). Its too far to have an internship as a student unless you could schedule classes to have no classes on certain days. There isn't much to do then, except go to secret parties or loiter around campus. Many students went home or to other campuses when I attended.

As an alumni, I would caution people who either pay out of pocket for Wingate or major in liberal arts from attending. The tuition is simply too high to pay off in a reasonable time. I graduated with a double major, 3.9 GPA, and the only full time job I could find after searching for 5 months was as a clerical assistant at the health department. Worst job ever, made a whopping $24,000 a year (in 2005). Even being fluent in Spanish and searching for jobs in the Charlotte, Raleigh, and Piedmont Triad areas, I could not find a decent-paying job. It took 5 years and a Master's degree to finally earn above $30,000 dollars. It's not the school's fault, I know, but HS students shouldn't expect to get a BA in anything and make a decent salary. So if you don't learn on-the-job skills in college (and in many majors, you won't), prepare for graduate school. And if you need a BA as a 'stepping stone' to grad school, there must be cheaper and more challenging options elsewhere.
