Longwood was actually my last choice of the four schools I applied to when I was a high school student. However, I was the fifth member of my family to attend, and it turned out to be the best place for me. I did well at Longwood and had the opportunity to study other subjects that I would not have otherwise studied. As a result, I became very involved with the music department and have had a lot of opportunities to use the musical talent I had no idea I had before I went to college. I have also been treated with a lot of warmth as an alum. The former VP for Student Affairs once sent me a handwritten note after I waited on her at a restaurant (I worked there before I went to grad school). She took the time to find my address and send me a nice note to encourage me as I continued my education. I also received a nice email from the current president (who was not president when I was at Longwood). She had asked alums how they felt about Longwood's potential new status as a university and I had responded. She encouraged me to hurry up and finish grad school so I could teach there! I think Longwood is a great school and I know that even after the devastation of the fire of 2001, it will continue to emerge as a force with which to be reckoned.
