i knew many who were expelled. some for interracial dating (a rule which once was condemned from the pulpit as an eternal sin clearly taught in God's immutable Holy Bible...but has since been declared "okay" because of media pressure), some for drinking alcohol, some for kissing their fiancees, some for having affairs with teachers, some for listening to rock music, some for cheating, some for skipping church to watch the superbowl.....

bob jones university will not tolerate their students right to free speech or free thought. just look at the agreement you have to sign with the application. they feel students should not think for themselves, are incapable of making their own moral decisions, and should have to completely submit to the administration's "christian nourishment". any student suspected of disagreeing with any of their standards will be investigated (tapped phone calls, roommates encouraged to spy and then blow the whistle, security notified to check your parking spot for your car (if you're a junior or senior; freshmen aren't allowed to have cars on campus)).

students are encouraged to enforce the rules at all costs. if you go through your roommates belongings and find something that is against the rules (aka an amy grant cd, maxim magazine, cigarettes), and then turn your roommate in, you will be rewarded and be a likely candidate to become a "prayer captain" in the dorms. and the offending student will probably be expelled. (note: if you get in trouble, you have the right to plea-bargin - aka turn in everyone you know who breaks the rules, and they might let you stay if you do something like pretend to get saved from the experience).

anyone reading this already knows about most of the rules (can't wear jeans outside the dorm, can't touch someone of the opposite sex on or off campus, have to be in bed by 11:00pm each night, have to wake up at 7:30am each weekday, can't have a television, can't go off campus without permission, can't wear pants if you're female, can't date anywhere except the dining common, snack shop, sports games, church services, or campus plays, and the dating parlor (there's a bunch of couches set up in this room and hostesses walk around and stare at you and make sure you're not touching your date). and you can't date after 7:00pm unless it's the weekend. (and if you're a married town student living off campus, your wife - who doesn't attend the university - cannot wear pants outside the house - otherwise you will be given demerits!!!)

but what you don't know is how students are encouraged to turn in other students who don't comply. "if you allow sin to go on without reporting it, you are just as guilty as the offending party". this sets up a sickening political display of holier than thou peers competing to appear to be the most righteous in the eyes of the administration...in hopes of becoming empowered with a hall leader or prayer captain position. it truly creates a hostile unfriendly environment of people looking to find people breaking the rules.

what you don't know is if you attend on "work scholarship", you'll be assigned a random "job" on campus that pays less than minimum wage (can range from night cleanup to bookstore to baker to just about any job you'd find on a campus - including janitorial). you are told it is God's will you're assigned the specific job (which was random), and if you are not interested in the position (i.e. dishwash from 5am to 11am each morning) you are sinning and rebelling against gods will, and will be removed from work scholarship. paying students less than minimum wage to do the work which should be done by people make a living should raise some flags. (perhaps they do this so they can afford new artwork in their multi-million dollar art gallery...and of course, some small pieces for Dr Bob's mansion)

what you don't know is you CANNOT, to the knowledge of anyone else on campus, disagree with anything spoken from the pulpit (alcohol, christian "rock", catholics going to hell, movie theatres) or you WILL be targetted as i discussed above. (if it involves any classwork you will be given an F on the assignment).

what you don't know, is if you do not have your bill payed, you are FORCED to sign a promisary note at 15% interest before you are allowed to take your final exams.

what you don't know, is if your prayer captain and/or hall leader convinces your dorm supervisor you won't represent what the university stands for when you graduate, the university will do all they can to make sure you don't.

what you don't know, is you are NOT allowed to talk to a member of the opposite sex off campus, unless it is at church (or you are witnessing in a group with appropriate staff present). i am NOT joking.

what you don't know, is bob jones university has staff and loyal followers all over greenville looking for vehicles with bju stickers violating the rules. (i know people who were expelled because someone reported their license number to the school after seeing their car parked at a movie theatre, another student for smoking, another student for being at a pool hall).well now you know. and unless you can feel good about everything i wrote above (and are obviously blind and mindless), bj is definitely NOT the place for you...unless you can put on one hell of an act. why take the risk and associate with something this backwards and disturbing? (unless, of course, you agree with such a sickening pathetic excuse for an organization)
